Day 5: Restaurant Review

Review of The Mixx
by Brianna

I went to The Mixx at 11942 Roe Ave in Overland Park. When you get there, you see a lot of white, and I mean a lot of white. The interior looks like an igloo, but it's lukewarm inside. The music in there isn't too loud. The sandwiches are very cold, but some of them aren't. There is a wall dividing the area of tables and chairs and the walk-in area. There was a really nice centerpiece in the middle of  the table.

The menu features a lot of things that start with "S." There is a lot of salads, sandwiches, and sides that will sure fill you up. Many things on the menu are under $20. You can dispose your food easily. The service is very nice, but a little slow. There was a good portion of people there.

What I ordered was a "Create Your Own Sandwich" with smoked ham and American cheese, and it was an okay sandwich. My sandwich was unseasoned yet it was pretty good. I would recommend that you put what you want on a sandwich. The sandwiches there are worse than at Subway.

If you eat the food there, expect the staff to do an OK job of giving you what you ask for. The food will just be all right, not the best sandwich in the world, but it's just enough to make you full.

Even though the food lacks taste, the bread is really good. Because the atmosphere is an igloo and the menu is bland, it's enough to make you wonder: why in the world did I come here

Here are my ratings on  The Mixx
Food: ⭐⭐️️1/2

Day 4: KCUR

Teacher’s note: On Thursday, students listened to podcasts and discussed the attributes that make professional podcasts successful. Then they created their own podcasts, focusing on a topic meaningful to them. Students practiced monitoring their volume, pitch, and speed to optimize their vocal deliveries. Here is Brianna's podcast:

Later that day, students toured KCUR studios in Kansas City. As their kind and knowledgeable host, Donna Vestal—director of content strategy—provided background information on public radio introduced the students to KCUR announcer Linda Sher.

Director of Community Engagement Ron Jones then had each student record a promo for the popular KCUR program Up To Date. You can hear Brianna's promo below.

Day 3: KCPT

Teacher's Note: On Wednesday, students took a tour of the KCPT studios in Kansas City, learning about what distinguishes public television from its commercial counterpart. With those differences in mind, each student wrote and directed a public service announcement. Here is Brianna's.

Day 2: KU School of Journalism

MEDIA MANIA VISITS KU SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM

LAWRENCE, Kan. — Seven Media Mania campers went to the KU School of Journalism in Lawrence, Kan., on Tuesday, June 7, to learn about media and journalism.

KU Academic Advisor Ashley Gomez led the tour. Mrs. Gomez remarked that working at KU has reinforced the idea that helping students is what she wants to do in her life. As part of her job, she helps a lot of students get settled into their new home, college.

Camper Catherine  said, "I liked the campus because it is so cool to see the different rooms."

Taking a tour of the KU School of Journalism is a great way to discover journalism and media. These seven students got to experience that in a way that nobody could imagine. And it was pretty magical.

Day 1: The Jungle Book Movie Review

Review of The Jungle Book
by Brianna L.

The Jungle Book is a very interesting movie. This movie is about Mowgli (Neel Sethi), who has to stop Shere Khan (Idris Elba) before he eats him. With the help of some friends, can Mowgli finally stop Shere Khan?

The movie opens with Mowgli running through the forest, learning how to run with the pack. In sharp contrast, the beginning of the hand-drawn animated movie opens with Mowgli as a baby in an old abandoned boat.

In this Jungle Book, King Louie (Christopher Walken) is literally huge, but in the hand-drawn one, King Louie was an orangutan. Kaa (Scarlet Johansson) was a girl and freakishly large, but in the hand-drawn movie, Kaa was a boy and wasn't so large. In this movie there was a drought and a Peace Rock, then Shere Khan (Idris Elba) threatens Mowgli which never happens in the hand-drawn version.

This movie totally stunk because it was inaccurate and scary. I couldn't believe it was rated PG; it should be rated PG-13. In my notes on this movie, there was only one positive note: the jungle sets are really cool, and the CGI is really good.

I would like to speak to Jon Favreau, the director of the film, and tell him that his movie stinks worse than my tennis shoes after I run a mile. I really hope you're happy Walt Disney Studios, because this movie is terrible. Walt Disney probably would not like this movie.

I closed my eyes during about half of the movie because there are so many scary parts. Rudyard Kipling would not be happy with this movie. Every moment in the movie involving the tiger is scary. If I had to rate this movie, I would give it a F.

This movie is one of the most awful movies I've seen in a long time. I don' t want to see it again, and after you watch it, you'll feel the same way too because it just might be something to waste your money. Don't see The Jungle Book, or you'll feel just as sorry as I am when you come out of that movie theater.
